An introduction to the relationship between
composers, science and the natural world.
This fascinating feature by Dr Graeme Watson, with contributions from
Matthew Keane, will be of direct interest to Music, Science and RE
teachers among others. We are therefore also making it available on
the REEP (RE
and the Environment Programme) website.
Further information on this subject can be found in the New
Scientist magazine.
What was the first music?
Two stones clapped together to make a rhythm? Feet stamping on the
ground?
Or perhaps just the clapping of hands.
When did music begin?
Perhaps it all began with the dancing, drumming and chanting at religious
ceremonies. Such rituals seem to stretch back towards the beginning
of human consciousness. But, in the end, there is no way we can ever
know for certain.
Whatever its origins, music is one of the most important ways we have
of giving expression to - and creating - emotion. Love, of course,
and our wonder at the natural world, all these feelings can be expressed
through music.
