You should now feel a lot more comfortable with rhythm to the extent that you want to make up your own tunes over the grooves we have been clapping to. These first steps in melodic improvisation are based on simple scales called pentatonics (not to be confused with gin and…)

PENTATONICS are 5 note scales, divided into two areas.

For Concert Pitch instruments the scale is CDF (Area 1) and FGAb (Area 2)
For Bb instruments the scale is DEG (Area 1) and GABb (Area 2)
For Eb instruments the scale is ABD (Area 1) and DEF (Area 2)

The examples given are for Concert Pitch instruments, so if you play a Bb or an Eb instrument, make sure you play the correct transposition.
